Easter Lesson

                                                April 12, 2009

                                           Matthew 27:62-28:20

                                   chps. 27:63-64, 28:1-8, 10,18-20

v. 63 – “Sir, we remember that that deceiver said…..after three days

            I will rise again”

Very High Blasphemy – calling Christ “that deceiver) – He who made the worlds –

that deceiver” – deceived – deception – Satan is really a liar (John 8:44)

and a deceiver (Revelation 20:7-15)

God is a God of truth – He is “abundant in truth” – Exodus 34:6

Leading up to the anti-christ – II Tim. 3:13 – “deceiving and being

deceived” – II Thessalonians 2:7-12  “whose coming is after the

working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, and

with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that PERISH”

Technology and the “Media’s” use of lying today in a deceptively

subliminal and not so subliminal way?

the last ERROR shall be worse than the first”

ERROR and PERISH are terms deeply intertwined and related!

Jeremiah 10:15 – Concerning idols and men who trust them!

Perish has to do with destroy/destruction/lost – Vine’s Expository Dictionary

Error – a wandering – a forsaking of the right path whether in doctrine or

morals – error in doctrine  is related to relaxed morality and a relaxed morality

is related to error in doctrine.

Jesus died and arose from the grave so that none should “perish” –

“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son,

that whosoever believeth in Him SHOULD NOT PERISH, but have

EVERLASTING LIFE” - John 3:16 - II Peter 3:9 “not willing that any

should perish but that ALL should come to repentance”  -  “Why will

ye die, O house of Israel” – Ezekiel 33:11

2 John 1:7 – “For many deceivers are entered into the world, who

confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh.  This is a deceiver

and an anti-christ

v. 63 - “Sir” -  (political correctness – “having men’s persons in

admiration because of advantage  - Jude 1:16)

v. 64 – “the last error shall be worse than the first?”

Error – Bill Buckner – no life or death matter

Error – Pilot error – life and death matter –

Error – wrong turn – miles out of the way – nothing – just an inconvenience

The children of Israel took a wrong turn coming out of Egypt

            and a week’s journey turned into a wandering of 40 years –

Numbers 14:28-34 – till every person who had made the

            mistake of “unbelief” died out!

Error – mathematical  problem – poor grade – this too shall pass

Error of  Opinion (may be tolerated where reason is left free to combat

it) – Thomas Jefferson

E3 - Baseball Box Score – Heaven’s Score Book – E Jane Roe

attention – a lapse of a moment can cause lose of a life –

Let us think for a few moments about the use of the term error in

the Scriptures.

  • II Samuel 6:7 – Uzzah was put to death by God for “his error” –

            Compare I Timothy 5:24-25 – (I recommend I Chronicles 13,15

Spurgeon Sermon – The Lesson of Uzza) – this web site

  • Isaiah 32:6 – It is possible to “utter error against the Lord”

  • Romans 1:27 – Homosexuality brings on disease which is “a

recompense of their error which was meet (was due)” – this

is not necessarily the last error but it may be the last error

            you ever make!

  • II Peter 2:18 – there are people “who live in error”

  • II Peter 3:17 – there are people who are “led away with the error of

            the wicked”

  • I John 4:6 – there is such a thing as “the spirit of error”

  • Psalm 95:10 – it is possible for people to “err in their heart” – like

      Israel did in the wilderness

  • Psalm 119:21 – “the proud are cursed, which do err from thy commandments”

  • Proverbs 19:27 – “instruction that causeth to err from …knowledge”

      Show about Gangland Thurs. night

·        Isaiah 3:12, 9:16 – Leaders can “cause …to err, and destroy the

            way of thy paths”

·        Jeremiah 32:23 – “lies and lightness  cause the Lord’s people to

·        Hosea 4:12 – “the spirit of whoredoms” has caused them to err

·        Amos 2:4 – Despising the Law of God and not keeping His commandments

·        “and their lies caused them to err”

·        Mark 12:24, 27 – not knowing the scriptures nor the power of God

causes men to “greatly err” – compare section on power.

·        I Samuel 26:21 – One can play the fool and “err exceedingly – Saul

            did it.

·        Isaiah 28:7 – People have erred in time “through wine and strong

·        Isaiah 29:24 – People have “erred in spirit”

·        James 5:19 – You can “err from the truth

·        II Timothy 2:18 – Hymenaeus and Philetus, “concerning the truth

have erred, saying the resurrection is past already; and overthrow

      the faith of some”

·        I Timothy 6:10 – Some have “erred from the faith” because of

covetousness and the “love of money”

The Greatest Error ever made is to DIE UNSAVED!  TO LOSE YOUR

OWN SOUL!  These also are synonymous terms

Matthew 28:2 – “there was a great earthquake”

Joyce Rogers called Tues. night about the one in Italy and I read in

the paper Thursday night that 275 people had died in the worst

quake in Italy in three decades – (Etna and Vesuvius) – we had

talked last spring at Holiday Burgers about setting our houses in

order as there had been one somewhere then.

The Bible says that in the last days there will be “earthquakes in

divers places” – Matthew 24:7, Luke 21:11, Mark 13:8 – and that it

would be “the beginnings of sorrows” – Luke 21:28 exhorts us

when these things begin to come to  pass, then look up, and lift

up your heads; for your redemption drawth nigh” – I quoted this

to Bob McCord Wednesday night and Joe Allen chimed in and

quoted it with me.

Matthew 28:18-20 – Jesus said “All power is given to me in heaven

and in earth.  Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing

them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy

Ghost:  Teaching them to observe ALL THINGS whatsoever I

have commanded you:  and, lo, I am with you always, even to the

end of the world”

John 18:1-6

Matthew 26:51-54

John 10:14-18

Jesus said “I will never leave thee nor forsake thee” – Hebrews 13:8

After the resurrection, Jesus abode on the earth for 40 days and then

ascended back into heaven – in Acts 1:11, angels said “Ye men of

Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven?  THIS SAME JESUS,

which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner

as ye have seen Him go into heaven”

Daniel 7:13-14 – “I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the

Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient

of Days, and they brought Him near before Him.  And there was given

Him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and

languages, should serve Him:  His dominion is an everlasting dominion,

which shall not pass away, and His kingdom that which shall not be

destroyed” – (compare earlier reference to the word perish”

Isaiah 9:6-7 – “the government shall be upon His shoulder:  and His

name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The

everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.  Of the increase of His

government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of

David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with

judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever.  THE

Revelation 1:7 – “Behold, He cometh with clouds; and every eye

shall see Him, and they also which pierced Him:  and all kindreds

of the earth shall wail because of Him.  Even so, Amen”

Revelation 22:20 – The Bible ends with Christ testifying “SURELY

I COME QUICKLY” – May our prayer be “EVEN SO, COME,

Life is a hard teacher – it  gives you a test and then teaches you a lesson!

“The harvest is past.  The summer is ended and we are not saved” –

Jeremiah 8:20 – Compare missing the boat – Matthew 8:11-12

We live in a cold, hard, skeptical and lost world – when Paul preached

to Herod Agrippa in Acts 26:8 he asked “Why should it be thought a

thing incredible with you, that God should raise the dead?”

Why would the people in v. 64 think that the resurrection of Jesus

Christ was an error?  Why do people living in the 21st Century

not believe????

In verse 27 Paul asked Herod “believest thou the prophets?  I know

that thou believest!” -  Herod’s response in v.28 was “Almost thou

persuadest me to be a Christian”

The time when the home, the school, the church, the community, the nation,

and the Holy Spirit agreed is rapidly coming to an end – the young of today

have no frame of reference to the above song sung as an invitation in a revival

that lasted two weeks or longer – or the tradition in our church on many a

bright Easter morn – “Christ Arose” shown below:

The Glue That Holds Us Together (copied from an e-mail)

We can trust that the God who created all this, also has the power to hold it all together when things seem to be

falling apart...how our loving Creator is also our sustainer.

This is a pretty neat story and an interesting thing that few of us know.  It's brief, so please read.

A couple of days ago I was running (I use that term very loosely) on my treadmill, watching a DVD sermon by

Louie Giglio...  And I was BLOWN AWAY!  I want to share what I learned....  But I fear not being able to

convey it as well as I want.  I will share anyway.

He (Louie) was talking about how inconceivably BIG our God is...  How He spoke the universe into being...

How He breathes stars out of His mouth that are huge raging balls of fire..  ..  Etc.  Etc.

Then He went on to speak of how this star-breathing, universe creating God ALSO knitted our human bodies

together with amazing detail and wonder.  At this point I am LOVING it (fascinating from a medical standpoint,

you know.) ....  And I was remembering how I was con-stantly amazed during medical school as I learned more

and more about God's handiwork.  I remember so many times thinking....  'How can ANYONE deny this?

And then I lost my breath.  And it wasn't because I was running my treadmill, either!!! It was because he started

talking about laminin.  I knew about laminin.  Here is how Wikipedia describes them: 'Laminins are a family of

proteins that are an integral part of the structural scaffolding of basement membranes in almost every animal tissue.'

You see....  Laminins are what hold us together....  LITERALLY.  They are cell adhesion molecules.  They are what

holds one cell of our bodies to the next cell.  Without them, we would literally fall apart.  And I knew all this already.

But what I didn't know is what they LOOKED LIKE.

But now I do.  And I have thought about it a thousand times since (already)... Here is what the structure of laminin

looks like...  AND THIS IS NOT a 'Christian portrayal' of it....  If you look up laminin in any scientific/medical piece

of literature, this is what you will see...

(See Diagram on next page – CY)

Now tell me that our God is not the coolest!!!  Amazing. The glue that holds us together....  ALL of us....  Is in the

 shape of the cross.

Immediately Colossians 1:15-17 comes to mind. 'He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.

For by him all things were created; things in heaven and on earth, visible And invisible, whether thrones or powers

or rulers or authorities; All things were created by him and for him.He is before all things, and in him All things

HOLD TOGET-HER.  ' Colossians 1:15-17 Call me crazy.  I just think that is very, very, very cool.

Thousands of years before the world knew anything about laminin, Paul penned those words.  And now we see

that from a very LITERAL standpoint, we are held together...  One cell to another...  By the cross.

You would never in a quadrillion years convince me that is anything Other than the mark of a Creator who knew

EXACTLY what laminin 'glue' would look like long before Adam breathed his first breath!!

We praise YOU, Lord!
