Appropriate God's Mercy

Joel 1-3

June 3, 2007

ch. 1

v. 2 - "Hath this been in your days, or in the days of your

A calamity unknown in memory of living men, unheard of

in the days of their fathers and unparalleled in the past

experience of the nation.

v. 3 - "Tell ye your children of it and let your children tell

their children, and their children another generation"

It won't violate church and state this time - I read in the

Western Recorder that Comstock Park High School's choir in

Plainfield Township, Michigan, was not allowed by the

school administration, to sing the "Lord's Prayer" in memory

of a class mate, which they had sung at his funeral in the fall -

Local school system paying a fee of around one million

dollars to stop gap what a paddle did 30 years ago -

$86,000 going to educate teachers - (now one year later later

this being June, 2008 - the Board voted to drop it)

ACLU - Bro. Bob McCord said the next issue was

stop Christmas cards which I find far fetched but

plausible to those who will not receive the truth but

believe a lie!

The original purpose of God - Psalm 78:5-6, 2b-4**

v. 2 - "give ear"

Rev. 2 & 3 - "he that hath an ear, let him hear what the

Spirit says unto the churches" - over and over!

The Lord insists the record be handed from one generation to

another but here it is talked about to impress upon the people the

work of God in this visitation, its severity, the sin

that caused it and the call to repentance!

Ezekiel 2:3-7 - impudent - hard of face - compare Eph.4:19

3:11, 27 - "past feeling"

Rev. 22:10b-11

"and they shall know that I am the Lord" - 62 times in Ezekiel

Importance of Word of God, of the human mind and

heart, of a concordance - impression of the word

"know" in concordance of Ezekiel!

v. 7 - "laid my vine waste and barked my fig tree"

beavers doing this to my trees -

v. 9 - apply to the USA - The meat offering and the

drink offering accompanied the morning and

the evening sacrifice - expressions of gratitude

to God for His mercies - a visible memorial of

Jehovah's covenant with His people - the fact of

it being cut off implied the cessation or suspension

of that covenant and the people's exclusion from

the covenanted mercies of God!

Cause - ACLU false - Evolution is false - Freudism -

sexual liberty is false - pragmatism is false -

psychology is false if it replaces revelation of

God's Word -

This in green below are pages 4-9 of notes on II Peter 2

vs. 4-6 - Ancient examples of punishment -

(a) fallen angels - cast down to Tartarus - the division

of Hades which is the place of preliminary punishment

(The Spirit World by Clarence Larkin) - as distinguished

from Gehenna, the place of final punishment.

(b) the Flood - the most disastrous thing that has happened

in the history of the human race - only to be superceded by

- the coming of Jesus Christ "in flaming fire taking vengeance - -

on them that know not God" - II Thess. 1:8 -See also II Pet. 3:10-11 -

the wickedness of man was great - every imagination of the -

thoughts of his heart was only evil continually - an awful -- ---

picture of the corrupting power of sin - God spared not the

ancient world - the antediluvians were ungodly - they had

lost the impression even of the existence of God and had

cast off Divine restraints. They ate and drank and

lived a life devoted to the world of sense. The exception

was Noah - " a preacher of righteousness" in the midst

of the prevailing ungodliness.

(c) the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah -

God condemned them with an overthrow and

turned the cities into ashes - His purpose was to

make them for all time an example (Jude7) unto those who

should live ungodly so as to know what to expect

from ungodliness! They were obliterated!

Check out Sodom and Gomorrah at

"consume" "powder"

Lot made a choice - he should never have been in Sodom -

he is called "righteous Lot" - he dwelt with people who

had no regard for law either human or Divine - their

behavior had a "wearing out effect" on Lot - what he

saw and heard tormented his righteous soul.

Bright side - "The Lord knoweth how to deliver the

godly out of temptation" - the godly are not

exempt from temptation but are delivered out of it.

Dark side - "and to reserve the unjust unto the day

of judgment to be punished"

"spared not the angels that sinned" - He will not spare

evil men.

"spared not the old world" - the fewness of the saved

"turned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes"

"saved Noah...a preacher of righteousness"

"delivered just Lot"

Through all this compare what Jude said!

v. 7 - "filthy conversation of the wicked" - the

behavior of the lawless in their licentiousness"

licentiousness - lacking moral restraint - a disregard of

sexual restraint - a disregard of strict conduct -

v. 8 - "seeing and hearing" - a daily grief to Lot - he felt the

guilt of dishonor done to God and the guilt of his

unhappy choice.

v. 9 - The Lord knows how to deliver the righteous

and punish the wicked.

My commentary said that Aristotle ( I don't know what

he has to do with it) made a distinction between

kolasis - chastisement for the good of those chastised and

timoria - punishment inflicted on the incorrigible for the

satisfaction of justice but it cannot be maintained in

Koine Greek of the New Testament

times - interesting thought though!

v. 10 - "chiefly"- "them that walk after the flesh in the lust

of uncleanness"

"and despise government" - all forms of authority

"presumptuous" - daring " - "Fools make a mock at

sin" - Prov. 14:9

They talk wildly, living on the edge, dissecting things above

their comprehension!

v. 12 - "as natural brute beasts, made to be taken and

destroyed" - as creatures without reason, as animals

to be taken and destroyed"

Compare Romans 1:21-32 - How ironical the evolutionists!

"speak evil of things they understand not"

"shall utterly perish in their own corruption"

The false teachers who act like irrational animals,

shall be destroyed with the destruction of irrational

v. 13 - they are not only insubordinate, irreverent, but

also sensual - "they count it pleasure to riot in

the daytime" - living for a day - enjoying what

is temporal and short-lived.

They give the business hours of the day to self-indulgence.

They are "spots...and blemishes" - they are deceivers -

and are self-indulgent.

v. 14 -

v. 15 - "which have forsaken the right way and are

gone astray

v. 17 - "to whom the mist of darkness is reserved for

v. 18 - "allure through the lusts of the flesh....wantonness" -

they hide their deadly hook with an alluring bait -

the sphere in which these men live - their habits of life.

v. 19 - "liberty" - these libertines preached liberty in

great swelling words - they talked loudly but

what they meant was the liberty to sin.

They want freedom from moral restraints - it is a revolt

against the Law of God - it is a LIE - it contradicts both

the moral instincts of human nature and the truth

of God.

They erroneously want peace and prosperity with

freedom to live like the devil, break God's commandments with impunity

and have all the benefits of a good economy but that goes against the

teachings of the Bible and God becomes involved in JUDGMENT!

Milton says they:

"Bawl for freedom in their senseless mood,

And still revolt when truth would set them free.

Licence they mean when they cry, 'Liberty"!

For who loves that must first be wise and good"

They are those who denounce "patriotism as the last

refuge of a scoundrel" and are unfamiliar with

George Washington's position "that it is impossible to

rightly govern the world without God and the Bible!

They deny that human beings are constituted with

moral capabilities and with faculties to be used in

a moral life.

but who endeavor to lower by their writings or

philosophy the standard of human morality.

"they themselves are servants of corruption" - all

the time bond servants, the slaves of corruption!

They have yielded themselves up to the evil one - he

has corrupted their whole nature and uses them to

v. 21 - "the way of righteousness" - the state to which we

are advancing where unrighteousness is altogether

and for ever unknown. ch. 3:13 Rev. 21:27

The orange below are pages 1-3 of II Peter 3 notes

v. 1 - "pure minds" - what if? - the mind is the reflective

faculty and it should be exercised in holy things!

What would the world be like if man took heed? Think

of the pornographic nature of society today!

v. 3 - "there shall come in the last days scoffers walking

after their own lusts" - self indulgence often leads

to skepticism - unbelief is associated often with

an ungodly life.

The pure morality of the gospel offends the self-indulgent.

It is a constant reproach - the Scripture teaching concerning

the judgment is repulsive to them - besides sin hardens the

heart! A sensual life blinds the soul and makes men

incapable of discerning spiritual truth.

v. 4 - "Where is the promise of His coming?"

"since the fathers fell asleep" - the first generation of

Christians were rapidly passing away.

All things have not continued as they are.

Adrian Rogers - Jerry Falwell - Roscoe Stringer - Bro. Duncan

v. 5 - the "willingly ignorant" - previous chapter full of this!

It requires effort to shut it out!

By God's Word "were all the heavens made - all the host of

them by the breath of His mouth!

Don't forget that He who made the world can also destroy it!

By His Word was all the fountains of the great deep broken

up, and the windows of heaven opened. "And all flesh died

that moved upon the earth" - All things did not go on as

The death of the soul is more dreadful than that of the body -

an eternal death, a state of separation from God and all that

is light, joy and love.

The mockers may mock but II Thess. 2:7-10

v. 6 - Peter's answer to the mockers - there had been one great

catastrophe - there will be another!

"by the same Word are kept in store, reserved unto fire"

The earth has been stored with fire in its inner depths!

The final conflagration of the universe!

Malachi 4:1 II Thess. 1:8

"against the day of judgment and perdition of

ungodly men"

Rev. 11:18 - "and shouldest destroy them which

destroy the earth"

Ps. 119:13 - God has revealed many of His judgments

by His mouth - by a plain and open revelation

and it is our duty to repeat them! There are judgments

of God which are a great deep, which He does not

reveal and it is wise for us not to intermeddle.

II Thess. 2:8-12 - especially - v. 10 - "because they

received not the love of the truth, that they might

believe a lie"

(See II Peter 3 Insert Maya at end of notes on Joel 1-3)

v. 8 - Judgment deferred should not be made an excuse

to persevere in sin - Judgment delayed should be

used as an opportunity for repentance! (See Ecclesiastes 8:11)

vs. 9 and 15 - the longsuffering of God - I Peter 3:20

Reason for the delay - Ezek. 18:23,32 33:11

v. 11 - "Be ye ashamed"

v. 12 - "joy is withered away from the sons of men"

v. 13 - Put on sackcloth - "lament" - repent - night and day

v. 14 - Abstain from food - external evidence of inward sorrow

for sin - don't work - give exclusive attention to

humiliation and prayer - everybody - "all the

inhabitants of the land" - poor and rich alike

had their share in national sin - (class warfare

of today by political parties)

The purpose of the assembly was to cry unto the Lord

to alleviate their distress or remove it altogether - to

be earnest and persevere till He be pleased to send relief!

II Chron. 7:14

v. 15 - A destruction from the Lord - suddenly,

They will behold the destructive process but be

impotent to hinder it!

vs. 16-18 - drought dries up the water - locusts

eats up the crops - people and beasts

seeking food and water and finding neither!

What had been but a few moments before like the

Garden of Eden was turned into a desolate

wilderness - New Orleans - 2005

A week before Katrina hit would you have believed - yet

seven days and New Orleans will be shut down?

Such judgments are intended to bring contrition

and repentance - kaliosis and timoria

v. 10 - "But the day of the Lord WILL COME"

"The wicked shall be turned into hell and all

nations that forget God" - Psalm 9:17

"In the which the heavens shall pass away with

a great noise" - the noun "noise" is used of the

whizzing of arrows, of the rush of wings, of the

sound of mighty winds or roaring waters.

Whistling/whizzing - the crash of a falling world -

the elements of which the universe is composed

and compacted, will be loosed, that is, the

framework of the world will be disorganized.

vs. 19-20 - God has said - "Call upon me in the day

of trouble and I will deliver thee" - Ps. 50:15

ch. 2

v. 1 - "Blow ye the trumpet...sound an alarm ...

for the day of the Lord cometh, for it is

nigh at hand"

A call for a congregational meeting for penitence

and prayer - the reason - the coming Day of the Lord!

share to the national sin and as a consequence, share the

national danger!

v. 10 - compare the language of Christ in Matt. 24:27,29

v. 11 - "His camp is very great...He is strong that

executeth His Word"

Resistance is vain and escape is impossible!

"who can abide it (that day)?" - the terrible

character of the day of judgment when the vials

of Divine wrath will be poured out - see Revelation 16

vs. 12-14a - the terrors of that day were designed to bring

the people to repentance, thus judgment was mingled

with mercy!

vs. 15-17 - an extraordinary fast - not a soul was to be absent -

old and young, men and women, mothers with infants

at their breasts, the bridegroom and bride on their

wedding day.

Nothing left to the haphazard nor was there to be improvising

on the spur of the moment - even the prayer they were to pray

was prescribed to them - "Spare thy people O Lord"

v. 21

v. 23 - rain - right measure - right season - local paper

talking about plight of farmers - yet they continue

to flaunt undermining messages of right and

morality - one of the worst culprits is the section

dealing with First Amendment Rights which trump

the Ten Commandments - we want to sin and be

blessed - we do not understand that life styles and

blessings have strings attached.

vs. 25-27

vs. 28-29 - not in drops but to pour out in abundance -

plentifulness - wide diffusion - without regard to

age - old men and young men, or sex, or social position -

servants and handmaidens, without national

distinction - "there is neither Jew nor Greek,

circumcision nor uncircumcision, barbarian, Scythian,

bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all!"

The blessing of salvation through the Son and Spirit of God

is as wide as the world in its offer and free to all who accept it!

"Whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved"

"Whosoever will may come"

The operations of the Holy Spirit have never ceased until now -

there is coming a day when "the knowledge of the Lord shall

cover the earth, as the waters cover the sea" - Isaiah 11:9

vs. 30-31

BELOW: ON JOEL 2:30-31 and ACTS 2:19-20

For what it is worth department - in reference to Pentecost and

Acts 2:19-20!??!!

It is true that Jesus said that "It is not for you to know the times

or the seasons, which the Father hath put in His own power" - Acts 1:7

that no man knows the day nor the hour - Matt. 24:36, Mark 13:32

but He also said that when things start being fulfilled to "Look up for

your redemption draweth nigh" - Luke 21:28 - and "this generation

shall not pass until all these things be fulfilled." - Matt. 24:34 and Luke 21:32

Blood moon eclipses: 2nd Coming in 2015?
Minister uses NASA forecasting to study signals of Jesus' return

Total lunar eclipses often make the moon appear red

Will Jesus Christ return to Earth in the year 2015?

And can studying NASA's website provide evidence for such a scenario?

A minister who promotes the Old Testament roots of Christianity suggests a
rare string of lunar and solar eclipses said to fall on God's annual holy
days seven years from now could herald what's come to be known as the
"Second Coming" of Jesus.

"God wants us to look at the biblical calendar," says Mark Biltz, pastor of
El Shaddai Ministries in Bonney Lake, Wash. "The reason we need to be
watching is [because] He will signal His appearance. But we have to know
what to be watching as well. So we need to be watching the biblical

In a video interview on the Prophecy in the News website, Biltz said he's
been studying prophecies that focus on the sun and moon, even going back to

the book of Genesis where it states the lights in the sky would be "be for
signs, and for seasons."

"It means a signal, kind of like 'one if by land, two if by sea.' It's like
God wants to signal us," he said. "The Hebrew word implies ... not only is
it a signal, but it's a signal for coming or His appearing."

Biltz adds the word "seasons" implies appointed times for God's feasts and
festivals."When we hear the word feast, we think food. But the Hebrew word has

nothingto do with food. It has to do with a divine appointment, as if God has a

daytimer, and He says, 'OK, I'm gonna mark the day and the time when I'm going

to signal My appearance.'"

In the Old Testament, the prophet Joel states, "The sun shall be turned into
darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of
the LORD come." (Joel 2:31)

In the New Testament, Jesus is quoted as saying, "Immediately after the
tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not
give her light ... And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in
heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see
the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory."

(Matthew 24:29-30)

Gary Stearman of Prophecy in the News noted, "When we think of the sun

being darkened and the moon not giving her light, we usually think of some

astronomical catastrophe perhaps the sun sputtering and the moon being

affected by all this. But maybe it's time to rethink this a little bit and
think of it as a natural cycle, the cycle of the eclipses."

Phases of lunar and solar eclipses on NASA's eclipse website

Thus, Biltz began focusing on the precise times of both solar and lunar
eclipses, sometimes called "blood moons" since the moon often takes on a
bloody color. He logged onto NASA's eclipse website which provides

precision tracking of the celestial events.

He noted a rare phenomenon of four consecutive total lunar eclipses,

known as a tetrad.

He says during this century, tetrads occur at least six times, but what's
interesting is that the only string of four consecutive blood moons that
coincide with God's holy days of Passover in the spring and the autumn's
Feast of Tabernacles (also called Succoth) occurs between 2014 and 2015

on today's Gregorian calendar.

"The fact that it doesn't happen again in this century I think is very
significant," Biltz explains. "So then I looked at last century, and,
believe it or not, the last time that four blood red moons occurred together
was in 1967 and 1968 tied to Jerusalem recaptured by Israel."

He then started to notice a pattern of the tetrads.

"What's significant to me is that even before 1967, the next time that you
had four blood red moons again was right after Israel became a nation in
'48, it happened again in 1949 and 1950 ... on Passover and Succoth. You
didn't have any astronomical tetrads in the 1800s, the 1700s, the 1600s. In
the 1500s, there were six, but none of those fell on Passover and Succoth."

When checking the schedule for solar eclipses, Biltz found two one on the

first day of the Hebrew year and the next on the high holy day of Rosh
Hashanah, the first day of the seventh Hebrew month. Both of these take
place in the 2014-2015 year.

The sun's corona becomes visible during a solar eclipse

Biltz says, "You have the religious year beginning with the total solar
eclipse, two weeks later a total lunar eclipse on Passover, and then the
civil year beginning with the solar eclipse followed two weeks later by
another total blood red moon on the Feast of Succoth all in 2015."

"If you think that this is a coincidence, I want you to know that it's
time!" exclaimed Prophecy in the News host J.R. Church. "There are

no more of these for the rest of the century."

The prospect of eclipses pinpointing the time of Jesus' return is getting
mixed reaction in Christian circles.

After seeing Biltz's interview, Jim Bramlett, an author and former vice
president for the Christian Broadcasting Network, expressed excitement.

"I have just watched the program two times and do not think I have ever

been more encouraged or excited about the soon return of the Lord!" Bramlett said.

"I see the whole sweep and panorama spinning together in a precise
scenario," he said.

During a second video interview, Biltz was presented with Bible quotes

that many think suggest Jesus' return will be a complete surprise, or at

least not specifically known.

The 25th chapter of Matthew features a parable where Jesus likens His
kingdom to ten virgins all waiting for the arrival of their bridegroom.

Jesus said in the story, "ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the
Son of man cometh." (Matthew 25:13)

Biltz says people need to examine the quote in its proper context.

"When He says you don't know the day or the hour, He's speaking to the
foolish virgins, not the wise virgins," he explained.

Biltz was also asked about the famous statement in Matthew 24:36 when

Jesus was discussing the signs of His "coming, and of the end of the world":

"But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven,

but my Father only." (Matthew 24:36)

He responded by referring to the annual Feast of Trumpets holiday, saying
Israelites never knew the precise moment it began, "because it was based

on the sighting of the new moon."

"When He (Jesus) says you won't know the day or the hour, He's telling you it's

the Feast of Trumpets because that was known as the feast where no one knew

the day or the hour that it would begin," said Biltz. "So it's kind of like if I told you, '

I'm not going to tell you when I'm coming, but "Gobble, gobble, gobble,'"

[pointing to] Turkey Day."

Church stressed despite the information suggesting 2015 could be a pivotal time,

"We don't know that that will be the concluding year of the
tribulation period ... so we're not setting a date and saying this is a
warning. We're introducing the possibility of a watch."

v. 32

ch. 3

vs. 1-3 - at a future time, under the reign of the Messiah,

God will subdue and destroy the Gentile nations

that had oppressed His people.

At the Day of Judgment, God will in just retribution

pour out the vials of His wrath on all the oppressors of

His people and church!

v. 4 - "What have ye to do with me, of Tyre and Zidon

and all the coasts of PALESTINE?"

"swiftly and speedily will I return your recompense

upon your own head" - as usual the wicked fall

themselves into the pit which they dig for others!

vs. 11-12 - "Assemble yourselves, and come, all ye heathen

.......come to the valley of Jehoshaphat for there will

I sit to judge the heathen"

v. 13 - a just decision come to, a righteous sentence passed,

the execution follows!

Rev. 14:15, 18 - the ripeness of the grain and the grapes!

"for their wickedness is great" - the masses of the sinful

nations are ready for destruction.

vs. 14-16 - God is a fearful Judge to the unsaved but He is a Refuge

and Strength for His people - "Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision"

-         tumultuous masses - noisy - with a hum - compare the description in

-         II Peter of the whizzing of arrows when the skies fall -

Accompaniment with the storm:

(a) the lights of the heavens will be put out - geared for the eye.

(b) "the Lord also shall roar" - the voice of God rolling in terrific

peals along the heavens! - addressed to the ear.

(c) "the heavens and the earth shall shake" - a convulsion of both

earth and sky - compare II Peter 3:10,12

There will be such a shaking that all the dead shall be

roused, as it were, from the sleep.

"Oh! on that day, that wrathful day,

When man to judgment wakes from clay,

Be thou, O Christ, the sinner's Stay,

Though heaven and earth shall pass away."

The presence of God is the immediate cause of these terrors.

Notice the destruction of God's foes - the deliverance of His

The salvation of God's people and the destruction of their

enemies go hand in hand!

II Thess. 1:7-10 - compare with Genesis 7:1 -

"Come thou and all thy house into the ark"

v. 17 - "there shall no strangers pass through her anymore"

the strangers out of the world.

Only the true citizens of Zion shall be there - only those who

have a right to be there - the born again in Christ!

Freedom of expression, pleading the fifth, the figments of

imagination stretched from the 14 Amendment - due process

clause -

Have you ever heard the phrase? - "I never knew you:

depart from me, ye that work iniquity" Matt. 7:23 -

in Luke 13:27 He say "all ye workers of iniquity"

It is a judicial process - in America - Grand and petit juries -

It is fully deserved - II Peter 2:12-15

Every one in that huge multitude thinks his mission is to

destroy the people of God and His church - they never dream

that their own doom is sealed, and that they are convened, for

their own annihilation.

They are convoked to appear before the August Tribunal of

the Righteous Ruler of the universe - (who only doth right)

to receive their just sentence - the executioners are already

on the spot and are agents of Jehovah!

"Righteousness and judgment are the habitation

of His throne" - Psalm 97:2

There are many verses in the Bible that reveal

God's ability and resolve to carry justice out!

"The end of all flesh is before me" - Genesis 6:12-13

One example of today - violence - rumble announced -

people will go to watch it - the real one will be in

the Valley of Jehoshaphat -

vs. 18-21 - promise of plenty - promise of perpetuity

Egypt and Edom and all the enemies of God shall come to

an end!

John the Baptist - "Behold, the Lamb of God who taketh

away the sins of the world"

Peter's confession - "Thou are the Christ, the Son of the

Living God"

Jesus - "Upon this rock I will build my church and the

gates of hell shall not prevail against it"

All the guilt of sin shall be purged away - the Church, the

individual soul, "shall be without spot, or wrinkle or any

such thing, but ....holy and without blemish"
