Be Wise About Family

                                    Excerpts from Proverbs

                                       January 25, 2004

We live in a society, that if not in theory, at least in practice,

has devalued the family.

Mother Teresa:

“America needs no words from me to see how your decision in

Roe vs. Wade has deformed a great nation.  The so called right

to abortion has  pitted mothers against their children and women

against men.  It has portrayed the greatest of all gifts - a child –

as a competitor, an intrusion, and an inconvenience.

18:22 - “whoso findeth a wife findeth a good thing”

Gen. 2:24 - “Therefore shall a man leave his father &

his mother & shall cleave to his wife:

                     they shall be one flesh”

Jesus said “For this cause shall a man leave father &

mother, and shall cleave to his wife:  and they

twain shall be one flesh?  Wherefore they are

no more twain, but one flesh, What therefore

God had joined together, let not man put asunder”

                                                Matt. 19:5-6

“a prudent wife is from the Lord” - ch. 19:14b

A special gift of God, a proof of His gracious care for

His servants.  It is by the Lord that a man is matched

with a woman.

There is a special providence that watches over

wedlock  (marriages are made in heaven) but

marriages of convenience, made in consideration

of worldly means, are an earthly arrangement and

claim no particular grace.

Opposite - Eccl. 7:26

I Kings 11:1,4             fulfilling Exodus 34:16

(look up word with play on "strange) Below:  Proverbs 2:16

Historically, women have been devalued - now-

NOW (National Organization for Women) - too big for their britches.

I Cor. 11:3-12             Isaiah 3:10-11

Eccl. 9:9                      Prov. 5:15-23

I Pet. 3:7 - “Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them

according to knowledge, giving honor unto the

wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being

heirs together of the grace of life”

ch. 31:10 - “virtuous woman” - expression combines ideas

of moral goodness & bodily vigor & activity -

Greek word is “andreia” - Andrea - ideal woman - upright,

            God-fearing, economical & wise.

Her opposite - weak, lazy and wasteful - the devil uses

women to mold & fashion men to his will.

Hand that rocks the cradle rules the world!

Few are privileged to meet with this excellent wife & her

worth cannot be estimated by costly material objects.

Contrast Job 2:4 - “all that a man hath will he give

            for his life”

with Eph. 5:28-33 - esp. v. 28

ch. 12:4 - “A virtuous woman is a crown to her husband” -

            adorning and beautifying his life.

Stories in Kentucky Explorer - influence of the Bible

in the Bible Belt - blessings - innocence - contrasted

with the Jezebels, Madonnas, etc. today.

ch. 31:11-12 - “The heart of her husband doth safely

trust in her” ........She will do him good and not

evil all the days of her life.”

I have been married 35 years - I would not trade the

HOPE of my wife being at the door to welcome me

for a million dollars and we have debts to pay!

ch. 24:3-4 - Read - by prudence, moral uprightness,

& the fear of God, a family is supported,

            blessed & maintained.

“wisdom, understanding, knowledge” - ch. 1 -

Material Prosperity

Spiritual Prosperity

ch. 15:17 - fat beef, sumptuousness & entertainment

is of little worth with feelings of hatred, jealousy

            and ill will.

There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple

and fine linen and “fared sumptuously every day” - Luke 16:19

ch. 20:7 - fruit - children - Ps. 127:3-5

Nowadays - children alienated from parents - Is. 3:10-11

Rebellious toward authority - “children disobedient to

their parents” (sign of last times) - “parents provoking their

children to wrath” - bringing the house down.

“A house divided against itself cannot stand” - Jesus said.

p. 78 - American History Made Simple - comparison of

church and state issues today - more and more

psychological ties  to “The Lie” - Ps. 11:3-7

II Thess. 2:10-12

Kids have to have a start somewhere - home is the

place God intended - it worked in the past - it will

work if put to the test.

ch. 20:7 - The man of pure life, who religiously performs

his duty towards God & man, shall bring a blessing

on his children who follow his good example, both

during his lifetime & after his death.

Temporal promise - Exodus 20:6 - “and showing mercy

unto thousands of them that love me & keep my

Deut. 4:40       Ps. 112:2b - “the generation of the upright

                        shall be blessed”

ch. 13:24 - Gold must be beaten & a boy needs blows.

“chasten him betimes” - literally - early in the morning -

before evil habits have time to grow or directly

            after the offense.

The chains of habit are usually to light to be felt until

they are too strong to be broken.

Danish proverb - What youth learns, age does not forget!

America Asleep at the Wheel - all can be traced to turning

the back on God and His Commandments!

ch. 23:13-14 - Save him from the doom of the rebellious

                        son - Deut. 21:18-21

Origin of beating the hell out of somebody?

Shall not die eternally - the Biblical formula is:

            born once - die twice!

            born twice - die once!

Matt. 5:28-29  - Sermon on the Mount

v. 13b - the expression means - do not be weak,

thinking that you will injure your child by

judicious correction and in this fear with-

holding your hand; but punish him firmly when

necessary, and, far from harming him, you will be

            doing him the greatest good.

v. 14 - Proper discipline preserves a youth not only from

many material dangers incident to unbridled

passions, but saves him from spiritual death, the

decay & destruction of grace here, & the

retribution that awaits the sinner hereafter.

ch. 19:18 - German proverb - It is better that the

            child weep than the father.

Chasten him duly and sufficiently, but not so heavy

as to occasion his death, which no parent has the

right to do.  The Law told what to do with the

incorrigible (unruly - uncontrollable) child  - Deut. 21:18

Reprove with gentleness, being firm & uncompromising.

                                    Eph. 6:4

ch. 29:15 - first part - bodily correction/corporal punishment

second part - discipline in words, rebuke when

                                         any moral fault is noticed.

The verb translated “left” is used in Job 39:5 of the wild

ass left to wander free where it wills.  A child allowed to do

as he likes, undisciplined - spoiled - is what it is talking about.

ch. 17:21 - “He that begetteth a fool doeth it to his sorrow:

and the father of a fool hath no joy”

ch. 22:6 - The child is to be trained from the first to go in

the right path - the path of obedience & religion.

The molding of the child’s nature, faculties, temperament,

will bear fruit all life long!
