                                         Ch. 2 (con't)

v. 3 - Walking in the Light involves obedience.

Christianity knows nothing of piety without morality!

To know Christ is to love Him, to love Him is to obey

Him and imitate Him.

"Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God"

"This is the true God and eternal life" - ch. 5:20

A tea cup cannot contain the ocean, neither the finite

the infinite - Incomprehensible  - Think - Who could

have made the earth and heavens except the Lord of

"keep" - eye fixed (observe - watch over protectingly,

            guard, as something precious.)

Ps. 19:11 "more to be desired are they than fine gold"

v. 4 - It is no great thing to know as devils who "believe

            and tremble"

"a liar" - singled out - "we must all stand before the

judgment seat of Christ"

v. 5 - Knowing God involves loving Him , keeping His

Word,  and having fellowship with Him.

A difference between the despairing agnosticism of

ancient days and the defiant agnosticism of this day.

To the first, Christ supplies information yearned for-

to the second a rebuke to our pride.

God's Son reveals the Father's love, His Spirit

reproduces it in us  - like a copier - computer technology,

CD burner -

"what He has promised, He was able to perform"

Rom. 4:21

"Faithful is He that calleth you, who also will do it"

I Thess. 5:24

ch. 4:11 - "Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also

            to love one another"

            John 14:21,23

His will is that we express our love to Him by keeping His

commandments - "His commandments are not grievous"

ch. 5:3

They are meant to be a joy, a treasure, a delight - Ps. 19:11 -

"Moreover by them is thy servant warned and in the keeping

of them there is great reward"

Growing conformity to Christ or the world?

 Romans 12:1-2 with vs. 15-17

v. 6 - Abide in Him - a habitual condition - like quiet time,

prayer, Bible study, church attendance.

The closer we study God's Word, looking at its  phrases &

words, the more far reaching and striking is its adaptedness

for the new millennium - IT IS MORE THAN Y2K COMPLIANT.

For example - the word translated children.

Eph. 4:13 - "Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the

knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the

measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ."

"In Christ"  - The walk -  a man to openly confess Christ,

go where  he will with a recognized public avowal of faith &

hope in Christ - taking his place among the ranks of the

faithful and pledging himself to be everywhere true to his

Savior and fellow-believers - that is what makes the world

go around  - that is what has made USA great regardless of

what those who would rewrite history would say - they are

only messengers from Satan, who is a liar from the beginning

and as Christ said, the works of their father, they will do.

They are certainly a different breed than the one from Heaven

in v. 5 of the first chapter.

I Peter 2:21 -  "Christ has left us an example that we should

follow His  steps."

Let us endeavor to act in our lives as our Savior and Lord

would act - the popular WWJD

Christ's purity, devotedness to God, His love of communion

with God, pity, benevolence, daring, patience, self-sacrifice,

resolve - are worthy of replicating.

This is too high for a Christian man but not for a man

"in Christ" - we are to:

"adorn the doctrine of our God & Saviour in all

              things" - Titus 2:10

"wounded in the house of His friends" - Zech. 13:6

"grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord

and Saviour, Jesus Christ" - II Peter 3:18

v. 7 - Old Commandment - Lev. 19:18 - "Thou shalt love

            thy neighbor as thyself"

New Commandment - "Even as I have loved you"

ch. 4:11 - II Cor. 5:14 - "the love of Christ

            constraineth us"

v. 8 - "the True Light" - Contrast Jude 13, John 1:4,9

Ever since the first Christmas, the world has been

clearer and brighter.

The darkness is passing away - the veil being lifted -

new light thrown on the plans and mind of God for us!

Christ came to light our way - it is not a matter of

indifference whether we heed him or not.

v. 9 - What walking in the light excludes! - this is the

            negative side of ch. 1:5,7

Hatred of a brother, love of the world.

Inconsistency  - "he that sayeth" between profession & fact

Thinking hatred is light - he proves the darkness in which he is.

Matt. 5:43-48

v. 10 - Made light his home - "abiding in the Light"

Security - in the Christian Life -  "Love one another as I

have loved you" - "Love worketh no ill to his neighbor" -

Rom. 13:9 - not quick to take offense, forbearing, patient,

humble, kind, not envious, doesn't vaunt itself (like the

He sees where he is going - Matt. 6:22-23, II Cor. 4:3-4

v. 11 - "knoweth not whither he goeth" - No light = Danger!

Knows neither the way nor the end  - Proof -

Matt. 24:39 - "and knew not until the flood came and took

                        them all away" -

Moody, D. L.          John 11:9-10

The brother-hater has darkness as his habitual condition

and as the atmosphere in which he lives and works, long

ago the continual darkness deprived him of the very power

of sight so that he is in ignorance as to the course he is

thinking.  LIBERALS

Ps. 82:5a - "they know not, neither will they understand,

they walk on in darkness"

Again II Cor. 4:4-6

Darkness their element - Fish

Fish in underground streams become blind.

In like manner, the moral and spiritual eyesight may be

trifled with until it is destroyed.

"knoweth not where he goeth" - tampering with our

Persons who have long been in prison in darkness

have frequently lost their physical vision.

The testimony of an inmate at Alcatraz - being confined

to darkness and how bad it hurt the head when let out.

I write, I wrote - epistle - gospel.

v. 12  - Sins washed away - we need first of all to have our

sins forgiven.  As unforgiven, our position is fundamentally

wrong;  we lie under the Divine condemnation.  As forgiven,

our position is fundamentally right;  we come into Divine favor.

In this section, there are perfects throughout, indicating past

action.  Your sins are forgiven:

A great blessing, free from guilt, delivered from

            condemnation, exempted from punishment, and

imparted to you a blessed consciousness of the

            favor of God!

Rom. 5:5 - "the love of God is shed abroad in

                                    our hearts"

v. 13 - Father - maturity, ripeness

Young Men - bear the shield, wield the sword.

            Little Children -

Good for everybody - Forgiveness, Fatherhood -

Topics deep enough to research for eternity,

            yet simple enough for babes.

Strong meat for adults, milk for babes.

Much to say that is appropriate for each stage of life.

The revelations of redemption are adaptive to every

season of human life.

All may go to the Book, pictures for the child to look at,

a shield and sword for the warrior, a pillow for the aged

and worn out veteran to breathe out his last.

Different periods of a man's life - a special danger

"I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me"

Phil. 4:13

"without me ye can do nothing" - John 15:5

Children - "ye have known the Father"

One of the first signs of intelligence in a child is the

recognition of the father - very early - John Ryan

and post card from Charlotte.

Children better than adults - "Except ye be converted

and become as little children, ye shall not enter into

the kingdom of God"

Is. 1:3 - "The ox knoweth his owner, and the ass his

master's crib:  but Israel doth not know, my people doth

not consider."

Jer. 2:32 - "my people have forgotten me days without

Young men - I Pet. 5:8-9 - Fighting - strength of body, good,

strength of mind better, strength of soul best!

Ephesians 6 tells how to fight.  Endure hardness as a good

soldier of Jesus Christ.

Young men do not have the experience of the fathers,

they are especially exposed to Satan's assaults in youth,

strong passions and illusionary views of life confront them

without experience but Christ always has his representatives

among young men.

They are to make up their inexperience and rawness by

a grasp of what God has spoken.  The Word must be a part

of life and in their memory, in their understanding and in

their heart - ready for use!

When the Holy Spirit brings the Word to them clearly then

they are invincible.

v. 14 - The young and strong graduate over to older men.

"Walk with God as Enoch walked" - "Remember now thy

Creator in the days of thy youth"

v. 15-17 - The region in which love is prohibited and why.

The lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes and the pride of life.

Thinking, planning, racing, hungering, thirsting, striving,

irrespective of the glory of God or questions of right & truth.

Walking in the Light excludes all love of the world.

v. 15 - John is not condemning a love of material advantages

which are God's gifts to men, nor of nature, which is God's

work.  He is forbidding those things the love of which rivals

and excludes the love of God - all those immoral tendencies

and pursuits which give the world its evil character.  That

which arises from a man that makes him the centre of the

world or of some little world of his own creation.  These

rivals clash with one another and also with the one true

Centre which is God.

Ps. 104:24 - "O Lord, how manifold are thy works!  in wisdom

hast thou made them all:  the earth is full of thy riches"!

There is in nature endless significance for our instruction,

it will awe us, much that is beautiful to delight us, much that

is bountiful to supply our needs and much to lead us to God

Mr. Spurgeon said, my Father made them all!

Love of the world excludes the love of the Father - "ye

cannot serve God and mammon".

Either love God or love mammon - can't do both, even though

there has been an attempt to form a God & mammon guild

but it doesn't work.

v. 16 - Negative side.

Source is in the sinful wills of his creatures and ultimately

in the ruler of this world.  "Ye are of your father the devil,

and the lusts of your father ye will do" - John 8:44

This region is dominated by things essentially and

radically wrong - they are not of the Father but of the world.

You can recognize it - a sinful element of self seeking,

selfishness, pride, haughtiness and boasting - the self seeker

and self pleaser who will not be burdened by larger and higher

questions of God, righteousnes and truth.

Acts 24:25 - "as Paul reasoned of righteousness, temperance,

and judgment to come, Felix trembled and answered, when I

have a more convenient season, I will call for thee".

Spiritual Russian Roulette, like the poor African children

playing marbles with diamonds, except for higher stakes.

Proverbs 7:22-23

"The whole world lieth in wickedness" - ch. 5:19 - a dislike

of God, a love of sin, pride, self sufficiency, a godless &

selfish use of things, men hating one another, fighting,

selfishness and an infinite mass of misery.

Prov. 27:20       Eccl. 5:11         Luke 12:19

The vain glory of life - arrogancy of living - empty pride,

pretentiousness, display - desire to gain credit where

it does not belong to us and to outshine our neighbor.

Grand house, costly furniture, fine cars, fashionable

dress, luxurious parties, splendid entertainment's,

outshining our neighbors.

Sensuality, covetousness, Vainglory - "a man's

life consisteth not in the abundance of things which he

possesseth" - Luke 12:15

This fountain deep inside comes not from God but from

the world.

"Look deep within" is the secular cry of the day - but

God hath said "Look unto me and be ye saved all the

ends of the earth for I am God and there is none else"

Isaiah 45:22

Three things untraceable to God:

            a. lust of the flesh

            b. lust of the eyes

            c. pride of life

v. 17 - The world is passing away - it has the sentence of

death in itself - already decaying (made subject to vanity)

It has no elements of permanence.  The darkness of moral

error and sin must recede before the onward march of the

light of truth and holiness.  The principles and principals

which oppose the Church of God are transient, are passing

Perishableness is inscribed on the world and all that is

therein - Ichabod - Eli's grandson.  The glory of the Lord

is departed!

No form of natural life continues always.  Families break up

and die, friends die, nothing on earth is permanent.

Not merely does the world pass away but the lust thereof.

After a time our capacity for enjoyment is diminished.

Indulgence in the things of the world has a tendency to

destroy the capacity for enjoying them.

At last, the man of the world, sated, wearied, disappointed,

looks back with cynicism and bitterness finding that he has

wasted his life on them.

"the lust thereof" - loses its power, its grip, its charm,

its passions - things lustily indulged, retain their cravings

but lose power of enjoyment - like a student giving a report

in health class of drugs effect on sex, they increase the

desire but hinder the performance.

D. L. Moody once said, he thought God made our hearts

bigger than the world.

Our capacity to enjoy is coming to an end.

To love the world is to lose everything including the

thing loved.  To love God is to gain Him and His kingdom.

The world is waning  - God & God alone abides (His

A far better avenue - "he that doeth the will of God

abideth forever" - a link or linked to the Eternal.

Attached to Him that is the same yesterday, today &

Doing His will, losing our will, he that saveth his life

shall lose it but he that loseth his life for my sake shall

find it.

If he lives, he lives unto the Lord, if he dies, he dies

unto the Lord.

If on earth, he fulfills his Father's will, if he departs,

he fulfills it in another.

Through all outward changes, in all possible places,

in any state of being, through all ages of eternity,

Christ shall be magnified in my body whether by

life or death, for me to live is Christ and to die is gain.

"The world passeth away and the lust thereof but he

that doeth the will of God abideth forever"
