II Chronicles 17-20

Jehoshaphat - I don’t know if he was Jumping Jehoshaphat

or not  - I knew Jumping Joe Harper of

Monticello - in fact he was under consideration

for the basketball job at HHS when I first came

here - story behind the scenes.

Son of Asa, Jehoshaphat was a man of the Lord.

v. 3 - “And the Lord was with Jehoshaphat” ... sought not

            unto Baalim”

v. 4 -  “But sought unto the Lord God of his father” .....
walked in His commandments....and not after the

            doings of Israel”

vs. 5-6

vs. 7-10 - Religious education of the people - none of these

priests or Levites are elsewhere mentioned by name.

Think of America ....Jer. 2:1-5.....Isaiah 66:12 ..  “borne upon

her sides and ...dandled upon the knees”....Ps. 42:4..  “When

I remember these things, I pour out my soul in me:  for I had

gone with the multitude, I went with them to the house of God,

with the voice of joy & praise, with a multitude that kept holyday.”

McGuffey’s Readers, New England  Primer,  The Bible, Ivy

League Divinity Schools - America could not help but be great

because America trusted in the Great God of the universe!

v. 10 - the moral effect - v. 11 - Philistia.... Arabia

Religious education rests on religious knowledge,

religious knowledge rests on religious teaching &

teachers and this means teachers of the revelation

of God.

                        Ch. 18 here & I Kings 22

                                    Ch. 19

vs. 1-3 - Jehoshaphat reproved for walking with Ahab

and commended for his relation to the Lord!

vs. 4-11 -   “........he went out again through the people...

and brought them back unto the Lord God of

            their fathers”

Reformation - remodeling & refilling the various offices

of the judges, priests, and Levites and earnestly

exhorted them.

O how we need a house cleaning in America, a

restructuring - think of the present battle for judges -

think what the stakes are - think of who is for what -

reminds me of a paper I wrote at Murray State

University in 1972 - “The Illegitimate Child in the

Family Tree of American Education:  Religion, Science

or Philosophy”?

Not from Dan to Beersheba but “Beersheba to Mt.

Ephraim” - v. 4

v. 5 - “judges...fenced cities” -  the stress laid in

Scripture on “justice & judgment” - it is impossible

to have a sure foundation in civil growth & stability

            except on religion and morality.

Founding Fathers projected this - impossible for democracy

to work among an immoral people!!!

vs. 9-11 - Jehoshaphat exhorts & encourages!

                                 ch. 20

                        Practical Religion

Aggression of children of Moab & Ammon -

Lot’s descendants through incest after God destroyed

vs. 3-4 - Jehoshaphat, himself, sought the Lord &

“proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah”

“Judah gathered themselves together to ask help

of the Lord:  even out of all the cities of Judah they

came to seek the Lord”

vs. 6-12 - Jehoshaphat prayed to God!

v. 12 - “we don’t know what to do, we have no

might or power but “our eyes are upon

thee” - Same results would happen today

            but for PRIDE & VANITY?

v. 13 - “And all Judah stood before the Lord, with

their little ones, their wives, and their

vs. 14-17 - God responded, sent Jahaziel to say

“Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of

this great multitude; for the battle is not

            yours, but God’s”

“Ye shall not need to fight in this battle:  set

yourselves, stand ye still, and see the salvation

of the Lord with you.....tomorrow go out against

them:  for the Lord will be with you”

v. 18 - What leader & people did!

vs. 20 - The Levites advise... vs. 21-22 - what the

            Levites did.

The Lord delivers.   Of the enemies of God in

v. 24 - “none escaped”

v. 27 - They return to Judah & Jerusalem, Jehoshaphat

            in the forefront....going with joy”

v. 28

v. 29
