                                                                   II John

This book is about faith molding family life!

v. 1 – A Christian Family  - unnamed, not among the great ones of the earth.

One of the chief teachings is this is an ordinary family like in any church

or generation.  They were faithful and tried to live up to their calling.

Truth was received and truth was embodied (incarnated) in their lives.

Grace, mercy and peace from God and the Lord Jesus Christ is assured

them – their portion.

“Fear not Abraham.  I am thy Shield and thy exceeding Great Reward” –

Genesis 15:1

Psalm 73:23-26 – “my portion for ever”

  • He is continually with me!
  • He holds me by my right hand!
  • He guides me with His counsel!
  • Someday, He will receive me in glory!
  • Whom have I in Heaven but Him?
  • No one upon earth I desire but Him!
  • My flesh is failing!
  • My heart is failing!
  • God is the strength of my heart for ever!
  • He is my portion for ever!

The greatest blessing in life that I have ever received is knowing God

through His Son, Jesus Christ!

It is wonderful to be a part of the family of God!

He is my song, my strength and my salvation!

Like Abraham, He is my Shield, my exceeding Great Reward!

Some great, but lesser blessings have come through:

  • my parents and sisters in my earthly first home
  • my family, wife and children in my own home
  • my grandchildren
  • my extended family of aunts, uncles, cousins and in-laws
  • this Sunday School Class and church
  • adults and young people with whom I have come into contact

      at work

Like this family, my family may have won no place in the history of the

world, which is passing away, but we have a place in the heart of Him

who abideth for ever!

Fame and fortune are tempting but are secondary – Jesus said “What

shall it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses his own soul?”

(Matthew 16:26)  Are we to be like Esau and sell our birthright for a

mess of pinto beans?  (Hebrews 12:16, Genesis 25:29-34)

v. 2 – The truth shall be with us for ever!  Truth is mentioned five times

            in the first four verses.

Christ is the revelation of Divine Truth to man.  “I am the way, the

truth, and the life, no man cometh unto the Father but by me” – (John 14:6)

v. 3 – “Grace, mercy, peace from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ”

v. 4 – Walking in truth and “thy children walking in truth” – God’s testimony

of Abraham was “And the LORD said, Shall I hide from Abraham that

thing which I do;  Seeing that Abraham shall surely become a great

and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in

him?  For I know him, that he will command his children and his

household after him, and they shall keep the way of the LORD, to

do justice and judgment; that the LORD may bring upon Abraham

that which he hath spoken of him”.  (Genesis 18:17-19)

as we have received a commandment from the Father” – There is no

greater joy on earth, whether parents or pastors, to find the children walking

in the light of God’s Word!  Out in the world, they are under special care!

They cannot always be under your thumb, they must grow up.  If the grace

of God be in them, they are safe everywhere!

v. 5 – Truth and love are noble companions – truth without love becomes

cold, stern and even cruel.  Love without truth is unstable and fickle.

v. 6 – “this is love, that we walk after His commandments” and they are

            not “grievous” (I John 5:3b)

born of God” (I John 5:1)  What it takes?  The “new birth” – John 3:3-8)

v. 7-8 – It is likely that some of the elect lady’s children had been deceived

and were not walking in truth.

“Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old, he will not depart

from it” -  (Proverbs 22:6)

A very sad reflection indeed, for any parent to think within himself that he should

be instrumental in giving his child a body only to damn his soul!

It was Mr. Moody who said “it is easier to lead your children into Sodom than

to lead them out!”

Food for Thought:  It is easier to suppress the first evil desire than to satisfy all

that follow!

“Be sure you sin will find you out” – “The soul that sinneth, it shall die”

Matthew 24:24, Ephesians 6:12

vs. 6-9 – Surrounding perils – deceivers, false teachers, false doctrine & antichrist!

Those who pour trash and filth purposefully into lives, and contradict God’s

Commandments like:

  • those who take God’s name in vain
  • producing shows or events that undermine the keeping of the Sabbath

  • those who dangle glamour, materialism, sex and might makes right!
  • those that teach children to be disrespectful (Bart Simpson, Bevis and

Butthead, King of the Hill, one that I will not name which undermine

      morals and manners.

“BE NOT DECEIVED , evil communications corrupt good manners”  -

  (I Corinthians 15:33)

Devil, antichristRevelation 12:12  - The son of thunder is melted down but  he

is still jealous of that which undermines the honor of God – These seducers deny

that Jesus Christ came in the flesh.  Man follows this “melt down” when he loses

a firm grasp of and a profound love of the Truth.  Jesus said “ye shall know the

truth and the truth shall make you free” – (John 8:32)

v. 8 – Don’t lose the rewardGOD HIMSELF!  “Look to yourselves that ye lose

not those things”  - “Examine yourselves to see whether ye be in the

faith” – Prove your own selves (II Corinthians 13:5)

Sometimes we go forward too rapidly and forget that which is meaningful in life.

We abide not in the doctrine of Christ!  It is a serious loss, especially to the

individual and family, to be decoyed by false teachers!

We need to be exceedingly wary and watchful.  The danger is not only outward

but inward.

“The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked:  who can know

it?  (Jeremiah 17:9)

v. 10 – The House reserved for and preserved by truth alone.

Every Christian parent is bound to lay down as the law of the house – “This

home is for Christ” – The children are for Christ and the truth, and I will not

imperil their souls, nor lend a hand to the propagation of error, by letting their

germs be planted here.

The Law of the House – Ezekiel 43:12   (I would like to recommend

Ezekiel 43 – Spurgeon Sermon – Holiness, the Law of God’s House –

this web site)

It is disappointing that a recent evangelist sells his wares in the foyer of the

church – (the very night we voted to allow commerce in the vestibule of

this church, I was reading a sermon by Mr. Spurgeon on Ezekiel 43:12  -

if I had only know, I would have referred to this passage to try and

convince my fellow Christians not to go that route – whether it would have

done any good, I know not.  The example of Christ chasing the money

changers from the temple was not a deterrence to the more liberal members

of Second Baptist Church – it would never have happened twenty years ago –

CY – 2000)

Is this an example of spiritual decline?  The laity must be the conservers,

upholders, and defenders of truth.  “If the foundations be destroyed, what can

the righteous do?”  (Psalm 11:3)

Too often, show takes the place of substance – I hope we don’t go off the deep

end here – many apostate or Laodicean –like churches are very flowery -
(Revelation 3:14-22)

Christian homes are nurseries of the church, in which the weeds of error are

not allowed to grow.  There are quite enough perils ready to meet the children

from inward corruption and outward temptation without them being exposed

to the additional dangers of finding seed-plots of heresy allowed in the

home.  The Greek word for heresy means choice.  (ai[resiv, hah’ee-res-is;

properly a choice, hence, an opinion, especially a self-willed opinion, which

is substituted for submission to the power of truth.

This epistle is important, in that it shows that Christian parents are expected

to train their children in the faith which they themselves believe, and to put

a guard around them, that their young minds may not be HARASSED by

the seductions of any anti-christian deceiver.  Let every parent say “My home

is for Christ, and for Christ alone!”  Our hope for the future cannot be

separated from those who at present are young.

From their ranks must arise preachers, teachers, judges, etc. and not perverted

old sit-com writers, vulgar playwrights, unimaginative movie directors,

crooked politicians, lying politicians, liberal and radical educators, promoters

of pornography, on or off the internet and all those who sacrifice principle

for temporary gain!  These, unless they repent, will suffer the plight of

those mentioned in Revelation 14:10-11 and Psalm 75:8 – “the wine

of the wrath of God”.

v. 11 – to give countenance or sanction to false doctrine is to share in the

responsibility for all harm which false doctrine causes.

doeth evil”

ü      Pornography is evil!

ü      Abortion is evil – Roe vs. Wade was based on A LIE!

ü      To say that the first 175 years of the United States  under the

Constitution that there was no “separation of church and state is

            A LIE!
