                                       Romans 8:1-14

vs. 1-2

We are living either in the flesh or in the spirit -

the flesh associated with sin and death, the

spirit with righteousness and life -

"there is now...no condemnation to them which

are "in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh,

but after the spirit"

The preposition "in" denotes an altered state, no

longer do we reckon our genealogy from Adam

but as grafted into the stock of Christ!

"in Him"

"found in Him"

"standing in Him"
"walking in Him"

"sleeping in Him"

"dead in Him"

The relationship is effected on God's side by His Spirit

and on man's side by repentance and faith.

It is true that "we all must stand before the judgment seat

of Christ" but before He will sit to judge men, he came into

the world to die as their Savior!  As the banging and nailing

of the scaffold is not alarm to the innocent, so the

threatenings of the Law of sin and death do not terrify those

who have received the law of the Spirit of life!

Your safety depends on the character and promise of the

Judge, Himself.  "For God so loved the world that He gave

His Only Begotten Son, that whosoever believeth on Him

should not perish but have EVERLASTING LIFE!

"He that believeth on Him is not condemned; but he

that believeth not is condemned already, because he

hath not believed in the Name of the only begotten

Son of God." - John 3:18

v. 2 - "the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus" - people may

disregard that life but the Creator made the

worlds for this end - it is the office of religion

to summon men's attention to this life, precious,

beautiful and IMMORTAL - the duty of

Christians to tell men that unless they live this

            life, they live in vain!

THE GREAT COMMISSION - "Go ye therefore and

teach all nations" - Matthew 28:19

The Holy Ghost is spoken of as the Source and

Imparter of the new and holy life!

If there be no interest in the Divine Presence, no

reverence for the Divine Law, no submission to the

Divine Word, no devotion to the Divine service, no

faith in the Divine promises, the man is DEAD1

"dead in trespasses and sins" - "no life in him"

How can a man be against things God is for and be

alive unto God?

Asking elementary school children (readiness factor)

explicit and psychological suggestive or damaging

questions??????????

The man is dead who espouses that!

Forbidding prayer at the Air Force Academy or at

least in Jesus name????

THE MAN IS DEAD WHO WRITES SUCH POLICY AS THIS!

That would kill a child, an unborn baby, a human

being for convenience sake, for sex sake - that man

is dead, dead, DEAD!!!!

v. 3 - Christ conquered sin in its own arena,

            that of human existence.

The Law could not deliver from the domination

of sin and it is not the office of the Law to

regenerate but "God sent forth His Son, made of a

woman, made  under the Law, to redeem them that

were under the Law" - Gal. 4:4-5

Heb. 2:17, 4:15-16

"condemned sin in the flesh"

v. 4 - The sinful propensities of the flesh remain in us

still - or that we will not avoid all sin - but God

through Christ and His Spirit gives a new

direction and tone to our lives.

vs. 5-8 - "after the flesh"? or "after the spirit"?

The lusts of the flesh and its antagonism to the

Law of God with its deadly tendency remains

even in the regenerate and we are in danger of

succumbing to it.

v. 6 - the spiritual and carnal man - two minds -

the one tending to life, the other to death.

The minding is what a man thinks of, aims at,

cares for.

The Spirit enables the soul to walk after the Spirit!

v. 7 - Sin's hostility to God - drags one down by riotous

animal impulses into a kindred mind of perversion

            and anarchy!

"the carnal mind is not subject to the Law of God,

neither indeed can be"

All the laws of God are for the good of His creatures -

man cannot come into conflict with the laws of their

being without harm and loss.

Vice ruins the physical constitution -

ch. 1:27 - "receiving in themselves that recompense

of their error which was meet"

Unjust acts disintegrate CIVIL SOCIETY!

Even Christians may become callous "having a

name to live" like the church at Sardis but in

reality "being dead" - Revelation 3

v. 9 - "if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he

            is none of his"

If we have the Spirit we will reflect Christ's character.

"by their fruits ye shall know them"

"thy will be done" must be the motto of our life!

"I do always those things the please Him" - testimony

of Christ - John 8:29

God's design is for the spirit to dominate the flesh.

Let the fiery, scorching indignation of Christian society

burn the damning sins up - JUST OPPOSITE IN

AMERICAN SOCIETY TODAY

The reception of the teachings of Jesus Christ tends to

produce temperateness, industry and benevolence

that are fitted to preserve the individual body and

body politic -

Righteousness unites a people in strength, forbidding

discord and promotes progress and prosperity.

"righteousness tendeth to life"  - Prov. 11:19

"the fear of the Lord tendeth to life" - Prov. 19:23

vs. 10-11

"the body is dead" - this needs no proving - this is the

sad heritage of the human race due to the

transgression.

The resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ is the  pledge

of our bodily resurrection - God is not going to leave

His work half-done - he has delivered our dead hearts from

the trespass of sin and He means also to save our body as

well as our soul!

The Divine Spirit that raised Christ from the dead,

will in us too, at last overcome mortality -

"Because He hath appointed a day, in the which He will

judge the world in righteousness by that man whom He hath

ordained; whereof He  hath given assurance unto all men,

in that he hath raised Him from the dead" - Acts 17:31

Christ came to bring "immortality to light"

The body is infected with death  and doomed -

God's righteousness, revealed in Christ, is made

over to man as the remedy of human sin.

There will be a restored world - a renewed mankind -

the curse will be removed BUT ONLY IN JESUS CHRIST!

"The Spirit of Him that raised up Jesus from the dead

.......shall also quicken your mortal bodies"

An "indwelling Savior" - Israel was awestruck when the

cloud of the Lord rested on the tabernacle, the sign that

Jehovah would dwell with His people - at the dedication

of the temple of Solomon the glory of the Lord

filled the house, the nearness and condescension of

their God caused the Israelites to bow their faces to

the ground, and to praise the Lord, saying "For He is

good:  His mercy endureth for ever" - II Chron. 5:13

But how vast the honor conferred upon the humblest

Christian when the Son of God not only visits him, but

takes up His abode in his heart"

John 14:23

vs. 12-13 - therefore we are bound to mortify the deeds

of the body - a duty we owe to the Spirit who

condescends to dwell with us - mortification of

the deeds of the body is the secret of life - when

we earnestly do this there is an abundant reward -

            Psalm 19:11

v. 14 - Moses' testimony was "Would to God that all the

Lord's people were prophets, and that the Lord

would put His Spirit upon them" Numbers 11:29

             - fulfilled in the Christian dispensation - "the Spirit

is given to every man to profit withal" - I Cor. 12:7

But some rely on innate wisdom to steer their lives,

others are governed by the customs of the society

in which they move - "the spirit of the age" - but

all come to acknowledge that  "O Lord, I know

that the way of man is not in himself:  it is not in

man that walketh to direct his steps" - Jer. 10:23

We are not led blindfolded but the reason is

illumined and the emotions are quickened!

If I willfully keep my conscience in darkness, and continue in errors which I might easily know to be such by a little thought and searching of God's Word, then my conscience can offer me

no excuse, for I am guilty of blindfolding the guide which I have chosen, and then knowing him to be blindfolded, I am guilty of

the folly of letting him lead me into rebellion against God?

Ask for guidance before, not after commencing an enterprise!
